I have been wanting to come to 'The Lab' for a long time and when I knew that they were opened on Saturdays, I thought it would be a perfect time to go. The Lab is situated on the busy Payneham Road. As the name suggests, the little cafe has been set up to resemble a lab. There are plenty of car parking spaces at the back. If you look up in the car park, you will see a huge snakes and ladders printed on the ceiling. I thought it was a clever idea.
Upon entering this little cafe, surely enough there was a poster of a periodic table. There were beakers and flasks every where. What would have been cool was that if the staff there wore lab coats and safety glasses! haha .. The little cute cafe has an open area looking into the kitchen with plenty of natural light shining through the front windows. There were a lot of things related to science in here. There is also a private room at the back also, perfect for a breakfast meeting.
We were here for some breakfasts. A good choice of food and drinks were on offer. I really wanted to try the cold drip coffee but it was not available that day. Sure enough my piccolo arrived in a beaker.
The smoothie bowl looked amazing, freshly sliced bananas and strawberries with muesli and chia seeds. The presentation definitely ticked all the boxes, however the texture wasn't quite thick enough for my liking.
The omelette with ham, mushrooms and rocket inside lacked plenty of presentation. It looked homemade. There was already liquid coming out the side and running onto the plate. The ingredients were fresh but it was way too salty. At first I thought perhaps the salt wasn't mixed in, but the whole omelette definitely had too much salt in it.
I liked the unique set up in this cafe, it is not something that you see often in Adelaide. Even though I didn't rate the food quite high I am prepared to come back to give it a second go.
