I was at the launch of Settlers Gin range at The Collins bar in the Hilton hotel a couple of days ago. I have not had much exposure to gin before, but I think after that night I am proud to say I have become a Gin fan. The new Spritz Cocktail menu was featuring the Settlers Gin Collection at the bar. On the night, we tasted some of the finest local gin on offer.
The beautiful Sarah with a tray of Old Tom Gin and Tonic for me to try. It was a very light and refreshing drink to begin our night. I had another one with lemon and cloves, well it was very aromatic. It was different but I liked it.
Next was the Sweet Cherry Fizz, yes with the use of Settlers Cherry liquer, strawberry cartron, disaronno, cranberry and fresh lime juice topped with soda and prosecco.
Rowland and his wife Shelley had a vineyard up at McLaren Vale about 8 years ago and the Maximus Wines Cellar Door was born. Rowland was a Gin drinker, so on top of all the wines he had, he thought why not make good use of the grapes grown in his vineyard, then distill the wine and ultimately turn it into gin. The whole process from picking to fermenting to bottling is done by hand at the winery. Yes he named it 'Settlers Gin'.. and that's how it all began.
Seeing the bartender in action and making my favourite for the night. It was the Blueberry Smash. It consisted of Settlers Gin, sugar syrup, and blueberry jam. Together with some fresh lime, and finished with prosecco and soda water. Finally poured onto crushed ice with rosemary. I love the fragrant of rosemary.
I also tried The Unknown, this one was interesting to watch. It is a cocktail built up in a wine glass. It consisted of campari, settlers gin topped with prosecco, stirred until glass is frosty.
Just like Rowland said 'The only thing better than a gin & tonic is two!!'
