Gondola Gondola

Gondola Gondola is a South East Asian eatery that is located on the corner of Hindley and Peel Street in Adelaide's CBD.  It has been open for a few months now.  I was welcomed by friendly staff member whom kindly showed us to our table, being a Friday night it was a full house.  I loved the idea of an open kitchen, it is casual.  Not to mention the use of windows which allow natural light to come inside.  There is also a bar, I loved the use of timber inside the restaurant, with all the signs around the walls I felt like I was in Asia.

There was a pretty diverse range of alcholic drinks to choose from.  In addition to wines, there were imported beers, sake and Japanese plum wine.  It was a hot night, so I ordered an Asahi beer which was very refreshing.

We decided to order a few dishes to share, and I couldn't go past the daughter-in-law eggs.  I have had son-in-law eggs at several restaurants in Adelaide, but daughter-in-law?  A must try!  It was good that I did, because the eggs were absolutely devine.  They were boiled and then fried golden brown and topped with a sweet and sour sauce, served with fried chilli on top.  Very typical of the Thai flavours.  Given the fact that the chef at the restaurant was originally from Thailand, with his experience in the kitchen, we knew that we were in for a treat.

I do love my tofu so we ordered salt and pepper bean curd.  It was crispy on the outside and the tofu was silken soft inside.  It was not salty at all.  I could taste the ginger and the crispy garlic with a touch of chilli.  Yum!

Now for something bigger, we had an entire barramundi which was deboned and chargrilled in betal leaf.  The moment the waiter took this fish to our table, we could smell the aromas.  We couldn't wait to reveal the fish.  The meat was just so soft and so smooth, it was perfect!  We loved the special green chilli sauce on the side too.

Last but not least, we chose the pork ribs served in a fresh coconut.  This dish looked amazing.  I took one bite of the pork belly ribs.  They were tender and melted in my mouth.  I loved the fact it was served in the coconut.

I was very satisfied with my experience at Gondola Gondola.  I would love to go back and try more from their menu.  I liked the atmosphere.  I liked the food and I recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes food from the South East Asia region.  It is a great place to hang out with a group of friends.
