The Barn Bistro is situated on the Main Road as you enter into McLaren Vale. It has a rustic look inside and out. As you step in, you will find sofas where you can sit down in front of a fire and have a few drinks. It was warm and cosy on a cold winter's night.
Their menu has been divided into tapas dishes where you can share amongst a few friends, or a la carte to give some options. Everything was sourced locally which I really like. There were a lot of gluten free options on the menu too.
We ordered a couple of tapa plates to share, starting with the scallops. These were on their shells, served with wakame seaweed salad and lemon myrtle butter. They were cooked to perfection, tender and sweet.
The next plate for sharing was the chorizo with squid which was pan tossed slightly. There was the chargrilled taste of the squid. I never knew that this combination would work. I was pretty amazed, the spicy nature of the chorizo really brought out the flavours of the squid.
If you like mediterranean dishes, then this one maybe for you. The eggplant ragu consisted of zucchini, capsicum baked with chickpea, polenta crusted okra chèvre. I think it would even be a very good breakfast dish. The flavours were there.
Pan seared SA Kingfish was next on the list. It was served with lemon myrtle aioli, with sautéed cherry tomato and green beans. The presentation was nice however the kingfish was a little over cooked.
I always look forward to having Eton Mess at the Barn, and this time no surprise I had ordered the same dessert again. It was just as good as last time. Crunchy meringue with strawberries and cream. A lot of places serve this with way too much cream. The thought of having cream mixed in with the dessert sounds heavy, fatty and filling, well this one was just right.
This is the third or fourth time we have been to the Barn Bistro and we will be going back again. The staff were lovely, friendly and attentive throughout the night.
