Din Tai Fung - does the name sound familiar? It is a chain known for its famous dumplings that is found across Asia, USA and Australia. I am proud to say that I have been to quite a few. I was pretty excited when I found out that Din Tai Fung was coming to Melbourne. It is situated in Melbourne Emporium surrounded by world class architecture.
The staff here were friendly and very attentive throughout the whole night. They even offered baskets so that you can put your bags in or if you have a jacket, they have jacket covers so nothing can spill onto them.
To order, there is a coloured picture menu and you just fill in the quantities on a piece of paper. Very handy if you don't know what you are looking for. For drinks, I had a lychee mint freeze. It looked pretty amazing. However it was a little too sweet. I still preferred the one that I had in Sydney.
The food arrived in a timely manner. In fact from the minute we put the order in, there food was coming within 10 to 15 minutes. All the dishes were designed to share.
Hot and sour soup
Shanghai style drunken chicken
Fried pork chop
Silken tofu with pork floss and century egg
Beef noodle soup
Wonton soup with spicy sauce
I was really looking forward to the colourful xiao lung bao (XLB) dumplings. These dumplings are for a limited time only. These XLB are different to others due to the precise construction. Each one is carefully weighed and handmade, steamed precisely to three minutes and then served straight to the table. I tell you these dumplings are to die for. I also would recommend the original pork dumplings.
I am not sure why there are many negative reviews about this restaurant, I had a wonderful experience there and I certainly will be back.
