Pickled Pig

Pickled Pig - we came across this restaurant on Trip Advisor.  There are only a handful of restaurants in the town of Warrnambool.  This one certainly stood out from the rest.  The name is rather cute.  The outside of the restaurant looked nothing special, but the moment we stepped inside, we were welcomed by friendly staff who kindly showed us to our private room.  We had made a booking even though it was a week night.  We were the first patrons on the night, but as the night passed, the restaurant began to fill up.  The tranquility and the old school charm made us all felt very comfy.  As we slowly chose from the wine list, the waitress kindly showed us our degustation menu for the night.  I couldn't wait!!

First course: Chicken with coz lettuce, anchovy and Caesar emulsion - the chicken wing was tender and well marinated, it was absolutely delicious!  The anchovy on top added the extra bit of saltiness and married so well with the Caesar emulsion.  What an excellent way to begin our 5 course meal.

Second course: Swordfish with kale, quinoa and samphire - A piece of thick fish fillet, cooked slightly pink in the middle and served with greens.  The whole plate looked so healthy, even though the fish fillet was thick, it was very well cooked.  Quinoa salad on the side was a perfect match for the fish.

Third course: Pork belly with carrot, walnut and nasturtiums - the whole dish looked illusional, perhaps it was the plate.  I couldn't wait to take a bite into this pork.  It was perfect in every way.

Fourth course: Beef with red cabbage, broccoli, onions and jus - the most tenderised beef I have had.  The red jus together with caramelised onions were amazing.

Fifth and final course: Lemon with mandarin and custard - Even though we were full by the time we got to the final course, there was always room for dessert.  It was yellow and white, a bit sweet then together with sour which came from the lemon sorbet.  It was a very well balanced dessert.

Last but not least, we were given these macaroons to try.  They arrived in the cutest wooden board that I have ever seen.  I wanted to take him home with me.  The maroons were on top of some artificial grass which we all know ressembled lawn.  It was a super brilliant idea.  Macaroons were not sweet, they were smooth and not cracked at all.  They were very pleasing to the palate, an excellent way to finish off our five course degustation.

Pickled pig offers 'dego nights' and we were lucky when we were there, the degustation was on.  For only $85, the quality of the food looked like what you would get in a five star restaurant.  Next time you visit Warrnambool, make sure you pay Pickled Pig a visit and try their dego nights!  It is a hidden gem and I am sure you will leave this place very satisfied.  I wished there were more of these restaurants around.  It has definitely made it to my favourite restaurants list.
