Gin Long Canteen

It doesn't matter what night it is, as long as they are open this Asian Street restaurant is always full of people.  It is situated on the busy O'Connell Street in North Adelaide.  We were welcomed by friendly staff members who were all smiling.

I would recommend booking if you have a big group of people.  We were quite lucky that night.  We didn't have to wait long before a table was available.  There was no need to stand outside either, as there was a bar at the back where we enjoyed a couple of drinks before we sat down at our table.  I remembered walking in and seeing the furniture and geometrical shapes all around the wall.  It definitely had the rustic look to it. 

I love fresh coconut juice.  Yes I mean fresh - a whole coconut was served to our table.  I drank straight out from it.  Super refreshing!

Gin Long Canteen provides a simple cocktail list, and for me I love my mojito and tonight I decided a queen mojito.  A bit of rum, palm sugar syrup and basil leaves.  I would have liked a little more rum in this drink.

Gin Long Canteen does offer an eat small or eat big menu.  I love to eat so no questions asked, we looked at the eat big section.  As usual, when there's a big group the best thing is to order a bit of everything to share.  However the problem was that we wanted to try everything on the menu.  The friendly waitress suggested the banquet for all of us.  A great way to try a bit of everything that the chef has put together.  I warn you, you will be full on finishing all the courses. 

To begin we had sugar cane prawns and some satays, both of which we wrapped up in rice paper roll.  There were instructions on how to do this, or one of the friendly waitresses will be more than happy to show you how to wrap the proper way. 

Next dish was the duck curry served with pineapples, cherry tomatoes and lychees.  Delicious, loved the sauce together with the steamed rice.

Both the braised beef and pork belly just fell onto the plate.  The meat was very moist and tender.

We were pushing through, the beef salad was absolutely delicious.  I could taste the eggplant, mint and lemongrass.

Pomegranate chicken was one of my favourite dishes for the night.  The chicken was cooked in a sweet tamarind sauce and the pomegranate just topped the dish.

Lamb shank was served in a curry based sauce and mashed sweet potato, it was a rather heavy dish to finish.

One of the highlight dish of the night was the barramundi.  The barramundi had been deboned and fried.  Crispy balls of barramundi fillets dipped in a lime chilli sauce was one of the best ways to eat the fish.

There was a lot of food - not that I am complaining.  For $39 per person it was definitely worth its value.  Outstanding service and great quality food.  We all had enough and there were even some to take away.  

I enjoyed my dining experience at Gin Long Canteen, bye for now and we will be back!
