Botanic Gardens Restaurant - Festival of Food Adelaide 2013

My readers contacted me and asked about the Botanic Gardens Restaurant post for the FOF, oops I had completely forgotten.  I have been here for breakfast before and remembered it being pretty good.  FOF was no exception.  This was the only restaurant that provides lunch using the FOF voucher and also on a Saturday.

It was a busy Saturday afternoon.  We had some lovely Coriole olives to begin with, together with some rustic sourdough.  The wine wasn't expensive either, a bottle of tempranillo was the perfect match to enjoy some of the beautiful food.

I have eaten confit of duck many times, but rabbit confit was the first.  There were definitely a lot of spices and herbs added into it.  It was served with pickled beetroot glaze and cornichons.    The twice baked polenta was a little crispy outside and the inside was nice and soft with a little tomato essence.  The scallop was cooked to perfection, seared on the outside and transparent on the inside.  It was topped with citrus mash and salmon roe.  Delicious!

Exotic Mushroom Pithivier

Exotic Mushroom Pithivier

The mushrooms were stuffed inside the Pithivier, basically a pie with ingredients inside the puff pastry.  The pastry was flakey and I could taste a few different types of mushrooms.  There were at least Porcini and brown mushrooms, and the health food Kale, reduced with port and topped with cranberry.   A gastronomical dish!

The chicken was served on top of a bed of pumpkin mash and brussel sprouts.  It was a tasty dish.

The skin of the ocean trout was crispy, the fish was cooked to the point where the meat was just pale pink and the lemon guerre noisette gave it the final zesty punch.

Free range Korunye Farms Pork Belly

Free range Korunye Farms Pork Belly

Everytime I think of pork belly, I think of crispy crackling pork skin and meat that melts in my mouth.  This pork belly didn't provide me with that crunch, although the meat was tasty amongst the Tonka bean puree. It wasn't one of my favourite pork belly's.

Something sweet to finish off our meals?  How about tarts with some dark chocolate from Haighs and popcorn with salted caramel drizzled on top?  A perfect way to complete our long lunch.
